An Expert On My Shield

The woman I will talk about is Alejandra Matus. She is a Chilean journalist who has worked in Chilean media such as La Tercera, La Nación, La Época, among others. She has also published books such as Doña Lucía (2013), Mitos y verdades de las AFP (2017), Los Archivos del Cardenal. Casos reales (2011), El libro negro de la justicia chilena (1999), etc. This last book was censored by the government of the time, and she was also accused of violating the State Security Law. Because of this, she had to go into exile in the USA. Currently, she is academic at the Universidad Diego Portales and a panelist on the news tv show Pauta Libre on La Red. I like her because she is a journalist who criticizes the current context of the chilean media, and also a journalist who has lived firsthand the injustices of  the system, then she understands what it is to be violated by it.

How Can Your Major Make the world a Better Place

Journalism is the job of informing people what they should know and what may be of interest to them. In this sense, journalists have an important duty in society, because they are in charge of going out to find the information and disseminate it in society, on topics such as politics, economy, culture, entertainment, etc. As a future journalist, ideally, I would like to be able to contribute to freedom and plurality of information, because today this doesn’t exist. But a more realistic idea would be to work in the field of culture. I would like to contribute from that area, because in Chile there is no importance for culture. I believe that journalism will be beneficial to the world when there is real plurality in the media, because if the media continue to be controlled by the hegemony, there will continue to be a political slant in the information.

The Story of a Picture

This picture was taken by my brother in law at my brother Ignacio´s last night in Chile (on the left).  The picture shows my brothers (Ignacio and Pablo) and me laughing and having fun. That night, my brother organized a farewell party to celebrate his last moments in Chile. I remember that there were not many people, but it was the right people. The people at the party had a vegetarian barbecue; there was a group singing and dancing; others were just talking. But there are also things I definitely don't remember (hahaha). However,  it has been one of the best parties I have ever been to. I really like this picture because it is the last photo with my two brothers. It also reflects very well our relationship and how we had a good time. I miss my brother. And I miss the things we used to do. I hope we can get together again soon.

Love at first taste

A meal that I really like so much and I haven’t eaten for a long time is Pad Thai. Pad Thai is stir-fry dish made with rice noodles, shrimp, chicken, or tofu, peanuts, a scrambled egg and bean sprouts. The ingredients are sautéed together in a wok and tossed in a delicious tamarindo sauce. The first time when I tasted that was in a restaurant with my dad and my brother. Since then, I really like that dish. And I like it because it has noodles and shrimps, things I love a lot, and it has tamarindo sauce, thing I dont knew until I tasted and I liked a lot. I dont know how Pad Thai impacts my health, but I guess if I eat this constantly, could be dangerous. But, in spite of everything, it makes me very happy to eat Pad Thai sometimes.

My Favorite Piece of Technology

I like many pieces of tecnology, such as notebook, playstation or heater (for cold haha), but my favorite is the cell pone, mostly for practical reasons. Nowadays, the cell pone is very essential for our lives, because we live in a globalized world where we need to be connected. In my day to day life, I use the cell pone for many reasons: to talk with my family and friends, to see the time and the calendar, to take photos, to check u-cursos, to check social medias and see memes. The cell phone affects me positively and negatively. On the one hand, the cell phone brings me joy and distraction when I see memes and social media or when I talk with my friends. But on the other hand makes me procrastinate. I recommend the use of cell phones because we can do many things with them and they can help us to solve day-to-day problems, but we should always use them in a healthy way.

Why did I choose my major?

Currently, I study journalism at University of Chile and I would like to finish the career. I decided study journalism becaues, honestly, I didn´t see myself exercising otherwise. However, I really liked the career and I’m interested in learning more about journalism. My dream job as a child was work as sportscaster. When I was a child, I really liked to play sports at school, but with the passage of time, I left that facet aside. Journalism was my only option after leaving school, but I also thought about studying psychology. My experience at the university has been good. I liked the courses and I liked the career, but I didn't like having to study online. I think that the classes, to be really effective, should be face to face. Well, we will have to wait for the pandemic to end.

Who am I?

My name is Matías Guerrero. I’m 20 years old, but I’ll be 21 soon. I was born in Santiago and I lived in Pudahuel since always. In my family we are seven: my parents; Raúl and Claudia, my two brothers (who they live independently); Ignacio and Pablo, my brother in law; Eric, my pet Shiro and me. I study journalism since 2019, but last year I decided stopped the carreer cause I thought that journalism  would be more difficult to study online. So, this year, I decided to return to study for shorten the career. In the future, I would like to live in other country, like New Zealand, where my brother Ignacio lives currently. Some of activities what I like do is listen music, play music with guitar, sing, dye my hair, play videogames, watch series or anime, etc. Also I liked to leave my house, but the pandemic doesn’t let me go out to see my people or just walk outside. I miss those times.
